Slapton/Torcross

Slapton and Torcross are idyllic spots for Your Devon Escape. They are both set next to the sea and the largest freshwater lake in the South West.

The two villages are situated hallway between the towns of Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, and are located within the South West Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The area attracts visitors from all over the world for its beautiful nature reserve, and scenic countryside and coastline. The vast waterfront is the perfect place for a family day out by the sea.

Both villages have thriving local communities with excellent local amenities. It is an area of friendliness and fun. They are a haven for country pubs, good food and beautiful scenery. With the two close by to each other, enjoy the history of Slapton village alongside the beautiful scenery from every angle in Torcross.

Slapton’s local church dates to the 14th century, with the village always having been a small coastal village. Slapton Sands also has its own unique history as it was the scene of an ill-fated military exercise in 1944. A Sherman tank recovered from where it sank during this action now stands in Torcross as a memorial for those lost.

With both Slapton Sands and Torcross beach on your doorstep, you won’t be short of spots to enjoy along this stretch of coastline. Both are stunning, smooth pebble and shingle beaches, and are dog friendly. They are both popular and loved by locals and visitors for its unspoilt surroundings and tranquil setting. The also popular Blackpool Sands is only a short drive away. The South West Coast Path offers stunning views of the coastline around this area if you fancy a stomp.

The area is great for walking and sightseeing. The Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve is the largest freshwater lake in the South West and is packed with plenty of rare plants and wildlife. The Nature Reserve is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is one and a half miles long and covers an area of over four hundred and ninety acres. There are circular walks around the Ley and Slapton Village on offer and there is no entrance fee to the Nature Reserve.  It is a hotspot for keen birdwatchers and nature lovers as there is just so much to discover.

If you love spending time by the sea, then this coastal cottage is perfect for Your Devon Escape. Perched at the end of a three-mile-long shingle beach, you couldn’t get closer to the sea if you tried.
