Annual Events in and Around Totnes

This unique town offers a whole range of events.  From air shows to craft festivals to livestock, there are lots of different and interesting experiences to give a try.  Below is a list of some annual events happening in the local area to try during Your Devon Escape.

ENGLISH RIVIERA AIR SHOW

Torbay’s natural amphitheatre provides a unique and stunning location for this annual event.  With air displays happening throughout the four-day show; sit back, relax, and enjoy.  Stroll through the local trading stalls offering everything from artwork to books and toys.  Indulge in some tasty food and a pint from the bar.  Take a ride at the fairground or explore the multitude of family activities.  Twenty minutes from our Hawkes Way property, this is one to check out.

CONTEMPORARY CRAFT FESTIVAL

Located in Bovey Tracey, a short drive from Totnes, this weekend is full of various activities.  It offers workshops, demonstrations, and masterclasses, to music, feasting and a craft cinema.  It is also a family affair, with free drop-in workshops for children across the weekend.  Sit back and enjoy some storytelling, a puppeteer company, and live theatre.

DEVON COUNTY SHOW

Located in nearby Exeter, this is one of the biggest events in the county calendar.  It is a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day out, sampling the many wonders of Devon’s idyllic countryside.  With food, farming and entertainment, there is something for everyone.  Head to the main ring to enjoy one of the many events that happen throughout the day or indulge in some tasty food at one of the many stalls.  There are a variety of activities for children, including milking, planting seeds and a sheep show, all to keep them entertained too.

GLAS-DENBURY FESTIVAL

This festival is in the lovely Denbury, a stone’s throw from Totnes.  A family organises it, families run it and families get together to come and enjoy it.  It is a whole heap of colours, smiles, fun, love, and experiences in an accessible environment.  The artists and bands are handpicked from the South West for a weekend of entertainment.  The festival also hosts BBC Introducing and holds a silent disco.  With food, drink, poetry, comedy and speakers, there is a variety of options to enjoy.

DARTINGTON INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL AND FESTIVAL

This festival runs over four weeks, sharing music making, learning, and listening.  They run courses for all ages and abilities to attend alongside over 70 concerts and events. The festival has a whole host of different events, including family-friendly options.  Concerts run most evenings.

TOTNES & DISTRICT SHOW

Live music, animals, and cars.  This show hosts a whole range of activities.  Stroll through the exhibitors, ranging from animals to food to crafts.  Visit the Party Barn Family Fun Area to play and enjoy.  Watch the harriers and beagle parade.  Take a horse class.  Admire the homecraft, handicraft and horticulture.  Check out the variety of competitions occurring throughout the day, including lamb rearing, cattle, crop, and sheep.  Why not think about entering the dog show?

TORBAY STEAM FAIR 

This event hosts three days of attractions for the whole family.  It has grown into the biggest steam fair in the area, expanding to include vintage cars, stationary engines and military vehicles.  The fair provides market stalls, children’s entertainment, and refreshments.  They pride themselves in bringing a new steam engine to the fair every year!  For those steam enthusiasts, continue the weekend by riding on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

INTERNATIONAL AGATHA CHRISTIE FESTIVAL

This event is run by a registered local charity, with the aim to use the power and reach of Agatha Christie’s global reputation to promote engagement and participation in literature and the arts.  The festival includes high-profile speakers and performances of her plays.  It holds a festival fringe showcasing arts and culture, encompassing a variety of engaging experiences for all ages.
