Beautiful Walks in Kingswear: Coastal Views, Woodland Trails & Riverbank Rambles
Tucked along the River Dart, Kingswear is not just a gateway to Dartmouth: it’s a walkers’ paradise. From riverside rambles to dramatic coastal hikes, this scenic Devon village is the starting point for some of the South West’s most rewarding routes.
Here are our favourite walks in Kingswear:
1. The Greenway Walk
Distance: 4.5 miles (one way)
Time: 1.5-2 hours
Highlights: Woodland trails, river glimpses, Agatha Christie’s holiday home
Start walking in Kingswear, this National Trust waymarked route winds through peaceful lanes and wooded paths to Greenway. The riverside retreat once owned by Agatha Christie. Stop for cream tea at the café or hop on the ferry back to Dartmouth for a circular journey.
Top tip: Pause at Maypool for a view of the Dart that inspired Christie herself.
2. Kingswear to the Daymark
Distance: 3 miles return
Time: 1-1.5 hours
Highlights: Rolling fields, coastal panoramas, 19th-century navigation tower
Head uphill from Kingswear and follow signs through fields to the Kingswear Daymark, an 80ft stone tower built in 1864 to guide sailors into the Dart. The views across Start Bay and the Dart Estuary are breathtaking, particularly at sunset.
Top tip: Combine this with a picnic at Froward Point or a visit to nearby Coleton Fishacre.
3. Kingswear to Kingswear Castle Loop
Distance: 2 miles
Time: 45-60 minutes
Highlights: Historic castle, woodland path, riverfront
This gentle walk meanders through the outskirts of the village to Kingswear Castle, a 16th-century coastal fortress. From there, loop back along the water’s edge or continue on the South West Coast Path towards Froward Point if you’re feeling adventurous.
Top tip: Spot steam trains puffing past as you return via the railway bridge footpath.
4. Coastal Walk to Coleton Fishacre
Distance: 5 miles return
Time: 2-2.5 hours
Highlights: Dramatic coast path, Art Deco gardens, sea views
Follow the South West Coast Path east from Kingswear to reach Coleton Fishacre, a stunning National Trust property with 1920s interiors and lush subtropical gardens. The coastal path offers a real mix of terrain and sweeping ocean vistas. A must for any keen hiker or photographer.
Top tip: Wear sturdy shoes. The path has some steep sections but rewards with unforgettable views.
