Free Activities for Kids in Devon

Days out with kids can be expensive.  That’s why at Your Devon Escape we wanted to let you take advantage of the free activities for kids in Devon.  There are endless activity options for you to enjoy without them having to break the bank.  Below we have put together a list of free activities for kids in Devon for you to experience on Your Devon Escape.

CRABBING

Children love crabbing.  It is simply a fact.  So, it is a good thing that there are so many excellent spots to try this sport in Devon.  From tidal rivers to harbours, be sure to bring your crab lines and bait to make your catches.  If you don’t already have the gear, then there are lots of local shops that you will be able to find supplies in.  Please be sure to always keep your kids under close supervision as no one wants to end a fun day crabbing dripping wet.  For the best places to go crabbing, check out this article.

DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK

Dartmoor National Park is made up of wild, open moorlands and deep river valleys.  The park is a unique place, being rich in history and rare wildlife.  What is so great about the moors (besides the stunning views and beautiful countryside) is the fact that most activities are completely free!  Put on your walking shoes and head up to the moors for a day of exploration for the whole family.  Or if you brought bicycles on Your Devon Escape, follow one of the many trails across the moors.  Or for something a bit more unique, download the geocaching app and find the stashes across the tors and kerns.  Make each walk a hunt for the stashes as the kids explore the tors and countryside.  For recommendations of what to get up to on the moors, head to our journal.

HOUSE OF MARBLES

Explore the marble museum and set the marble runs going for endless fun.  It is the perfect activity for a wet or windy day in Devon.  This small attraction is home to some fascinating marble runs that will keep the kids entertained for hours whilst you browse the unique gifts in the shop.  Their main business is to produce quality vintage and traditional toys, games, gifts, and books.  However, you will find they have so much more on offer than just a shop.  The site has grown over the years to become the shop, glassworks, restaurant, games garden and museum that is present today.  A short drive from Totnes, in Bovey Tracey, pop over to enjoy one of the many free activities for kids in Devon.

ROYAL ALBERT MEMORIAL MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY

The RAMM is a museum of curiosity and discovery located in Exeter.  It is filled with world-class collections and two-thousand years of history under one roof.  It offers collections from world cultures and natural history to art and antiquities.  There is something for everyone within the building making it easy to spend a few hours wandering around the exhibitions.  During the school holidays, they often run family-friendly events for you to get involved in; however, some of these have a small cost and need to be booked in advance.  It is open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Saturday, so be sure to check it out on Your Devon Escape.

SOUTH WEST COAST PATH

The South Devon section of the South West Coast Path allows you to take in some of the breath-taking scenery the area has to offer.  Enjoy beach views and clifftops whilst watching the boats go by.  Look for birds or keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and seals swimming about.  With walks of all lengths and difficulty, the coast path can be suitable for all ages.  Pack some snacks, put your walking shoes on and explore the coastline by foot.  This is one of the best free activities for kids in Devon, allowing them to embrace the countryside and coastline and look for wildlife.  For recommendations, head to our journal.

THE BOX

The Box is an interactive arts and heritage museum located in Plymouth.  It is packed with interactive exhibits, perfect for all ages.  It tells the story of the city’s history, culture and maritime heritage in a way that will wow the kids.  The Box is open Tuesday-Sunday all year round, so be sure to check it out on Your Devon Escape.
