There’s something incredibly exciting about discovering a restaurant that’s quietly redefining the local dining scene, and that’s exactly how we felt when we visited Verse Kingsbridge.

Tucked away in a converted industrial unit on Lower Union Road, Verse isn’t the sort of place you simply stumble across. In fact, finding it almost feels like being let in on a local secret. But once you step through the doors, you’re welcomed into a beautifully designed, intimate space where exceptional food, genuine hospitality and thoughtful creativity take centre stage.

More Than Just a Meal

Verse isn’t a traditional restaurant and that’s precisely what makes it so special.

The evening begins with pre-dinner drinks from 6pm, allowing guests to settle in before the tasting menu experience begins around 7.30pm. Rather than rushing courses to the table, the menu unfolds at a gentle pace, encouraging guests to relax, savour each dish and enjoy the company around them. The result is an experience that feels less like dinner and more like a carefully composed story.

For those looking for something a little different, the Chef’s Counter offers a front-row seat to the kitchen, where guests can enjoy a more informal menu of small plates while watching the team at work.

Seasonal Food, Great Music and Good Vibes

One of the things that immediately stood out to us was the personality of Verse.

Chef-owner Paul Hegley has spent over two decades honing his craft in Michelin-level kitchens, London hotels and corporate dining before relocating to Devon to lead the kitchen at Gara Rock Hotel. Now, Verse is the culmination of that journey, a restaurant built around great food, creativity, hospitality and bringing people together.

The menus celebrate the very best seasonal British ingredients, infused with subtle Mediterranean influences. Every dish feels carefully considered without ever becoming pretentious. It’s refined dining with warmth, personality and heart.

And while the food is undoubtedly the star of the show, there’s something else that adds to the experience: the soundtrack. The playlist, the atmosphere and the relaxed energy of the room all come together to create that unmistakable Verse vibe. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, enjoy a few drinks, listen to good music and genuinely feel like you’re having an evening out rather than simply sitting down for dinner.

Hospitality That Feels Personal

Perhaps what impressed us most wasn’t just the food, it was the atmosphere.

Despite the high standard of cooking, there’s no sense of formality or intimidation. Instead, Verse feels welcoming, relaxed and genuinely passionate about looking after its guests.

Paul describes the restaurant as “hospitality done thoughtfully,” and that sentiment shines through in every detail. From the warm welcome to the carefully paced service, you never feel hurried, just encouraged to enjoy the evening.

It’s clear this isn’t simply about serving great food; it’s about creating memorable moments.

Worth Seeking Out

Sometimes the best restaurants are hidden away from the high street and Verse is proof that great dining experiences don’t always come with a grand entrance.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a date night or simply looking to experience something a little different in the South Hams, Verse offers an evening that’s creative, relaxed and genuinely memorable.

If you’re visiting Kingsbridge, or you’re lucky enough to live nearby, we’d highly recommend adding Verse to your list. It’s one of those places you’ll find yourself talking about long after the final course has been served.

Sometimes the journey off the beaten track leads to the very best destination, especially when it comes with great food, a great playlist and plenty of good vibes.
