What to do this Twixmas in Devon

The time between Christmas and New Year is often the most awkward of the year.  Christmas has come and gone, and quite often you are left wondering how to fill the week before the New Year’s celebrations begin.  But not in Devon!  With so many Christmas activities still running and much of the regular Devon fun activities still open for you to enjoy, why not book Your Devon Escape and fill this week with joy in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.  Check out our recommendations for things to do during the Twixmas week.

BAY OF LIGHTS

A brand-new light trail is happening along the seafront of Torquay this winter.  A 1.5-mile trail with glittering lights and unexpected surprises for you to stroll along and enjoy.  Wander through and stop at one of the many lovely restaurants along the Torquay waterfront, or simply take in the sea air and beautiful lights.  Running until the beginning of January, check this out one evening during the Twixmas period.

CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATIONS AT BABBACOMBE MODEL VILLAGE

Join the Babbacombe Model Village illuminations with lots of sparkle and festive lighting.  Enjoy all that the model village has on offer, plus some delightful miniature seasonal scenes as they enjoy their Christmas.  The experience is a day and night one.  To enjoy the best of both experiences, we recommend arriving between 2pm and 3pm to make the most out of the Christmas adventure.  Open at weekends and throughout the Christmas period, check out their website to find out more.

CHRISTMAS TRAIN OF LIGHTS

The Christmas Train of Lights is now a must-see event in the South West festive calendar, so don’t miss out!  The festive illuminated journey starts from Paignton, where the vintage carriages are waiting decorated with thousands of lights, both inside and out.  Along the journey, you will pass through the enchanted forest which is transformed by a multitude of lights and feature displays.  The stunning show ends as you enter Kingswear and can look across to the beautiful Dartmouth.  Check out their website to find out more and book your tickets before they sell out and experience this unique journey on Your Devon Escape.

HALDON FOREST

Located just outside of Exeter, a short drive from Totnes, enjoy a walk or a bike ride.  With a range of walking and cycling trails to suit all abilities, take a quiet gentle stroll or appreciate an exhilarating mountain biking experience.  They also have a GO APE located in the forest.  Try out a high ropes course and see the forest from a different angle.  With lots of activities and adventures to be had, check out their website and find the right one for you on Your Devon Escape.

HEAD TO THE BEACH

Heading to the beach on a winter’s day may seem like a bit of a rogue idea, but not for us Devonians!  Wrap up warm and take to the sand for a stomp or join the locals for a cold sea swim.  Take a flask of something tasty with you to keep you warm or stop in one of the many beachside coffee shops to keep those fingers moving.  If the sun is shining it can feel like a summer’s day, and if not watch the waves crash onto the sand in awe.  Check out our recommendations for beaches in our journal.

LOADS OF GREAT INDOOR ACTIVITIES TO TRY!

During winter in Devon, you can try many of the activities you would also experience in summer.  Great places to check out are the some of the National Trust sites which come to life during Christmas and into the New Year.  When it comes to children, there are lots of activities to try out from climbing centres, to theme parks, to soft play and wildlife centres.  There is truly something for everyone.  Check out our journal for recommendations for activities to do in winter around Devon!

PANTOMINE

Looking for what to do between Christmas and New Year in Devon?  Head to see a pantomime!  With so many on across the county, there will definitely be one for you!  No matter where you are staying, there will sure be one down the road!  For recommendations of pantos to watch and where, check out this list.

WALKING

If you love a walk, then Devon’s coast path is a holiday must.  The summertime can often be too hot for walking for many people, so why not take a trip in the cooler months to enjoy it properly.  Wrapping up warm and rambling along the coast can be one of the best feelings.  Enjoy the stunning views and observe some of the wildlife in comfortable temperatures.  Or take a trip up to Dartmoor to see the ponies and a stomp on the Drake’s Trail.  You may even be lucky enough to catch some snow and try out sledging with the locals!  Or enjoy a section of the Tarka Trail by foot or cycle.  This 180-mile trail works its way through North Devon countryside and Exmoor National Park.  There are so many options for a good stomp this Twixmas on Your Devon Escape.
