Events That Put Dartmouth on the Map

With a range of events happening in and around Dartmouth throughout the year, this picturesque town knows how to have a good time.  Below is a list of the events on offer for you to enjoy whilst away on Your Devon Escape.

BRIXHAM PIRATE FESTIVAL

This festival started in 2007 by a group of locals to simply ‘liven up a quiet bank holiday’.  It has since grown into a something that attracts people from all over.  With live displays and historic sailing ships docked in the port, there are lots of activities for all ages to get involved in.  The festival hosts live music all weekend, showing of the best of local bands.  Come dressed as a pirate and bring your best arghhh!!

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF WORMCHARMING

This internationally renowned event was voted “Europe’s Most Unmissable Festival” by Australian journalist Grant Mills in 2014.  No experience is needed to take part, so head on down to join in the fun or simply just spectate.  Go laden with potions and contraptions to try and beat the current record of 149 worms.  Fancy dress is encouraged.

DART MUSIC FESTIVAL

This free music festival finds itself in the heart of Dartmouth.  Live music is hosted in venues across the town, so you can explore whilst listening to array of different sounds.  From folk music to church choirs to blues, if music is your thing, there will be something for you.  Local schools are involved, putting on an array of performances across the weekend.  With over 80 acts performing over the course of the weekend, pay this one a visit and you will be in for a treat.

TUNES ON THE SANDS

This festival is set on the beautiful golden sand of Blackpool Sands.  With the ocean a stone’s throw away, this is quite simply a unique event.  It hosts a mix of local artists as well as big names.  A fifteen-minute drive from three of our properties, indulge in their comforts after a fun-filled day at the beach.  Enjoy a cold beverage in the sun whilst listening to some excellent tunes right on the sand.

DARTMOUTH SHAKESPEARE WEEK

This unique theatre experience is a cultural highlight of the summer in Dartmouth.  Each year the Inn Theatre Company puts together a Shakespeare production, performed at Dartmouth Castle.  This group was started by friends who thought it would be a good idea to put on an open-air production.  It has grown into a much-loved annual event in the Dartmouth calendar, choosing a new Shakespeare production each year to perform.  Its growth is shown by Michael Corbridge, a senior voice and text consultant to the Royal Shakespeare Company, becoming their patron in 2014.

DITTISHAM REGATTA

This regatta takes place each august, with fun-filled events for all the family.  From rowing, sculling and whaler races to take part in or watch, to children-friendly activities such as a crabbing competition and obstacle course, there is something for everyone.  Stroll through the stalls of games, food, and drink, or simply just enjoy the entertainment. 

DARTMOUTH ROYAL REGATTA

This well-known regatta attracts thousands of visitors from all over.  It is one of the oldest regattas in the country, with rowing and sailing at its core.  Spectate or get involved in the various races, competitions and events taking place during the week.  From a road race to a tennis tournament and swimming gala.  Or ice cream eating, crabbing and pavement artist competitions.  There is lots to choose from.  There is an excellent firework display alongside live music and a fair in the Dartmouth carpark.  There is always so much going on for all ages to enjoy!

DARTMOUTH FOOD FESTIVAL

This festival hosts workshops, seminars, and demonstrations from local and top chefs to provide insight into the world of cheffing.  Exhibitors are dotted around Dartmouth showing off the best and finest of locally produced food, drinks, and goodies.  With celebrity chefs, parties, food markets and tasting shacks, this free landmark event is definitely on the culinary calendar.
