The Best Sunset Spots in South Devon

South Devon has ample spots to watch the sunset.  Whether you are looking for somewhere off the beaten track, a viewpoint with countryside views, or some place that’s easy to get to, we have you covered.  Check out the best sunset spots in South Devon below.

BIGBURY BEACH, BIGBURY-ON-SEA

Located in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is not a surprise that Bigbury Beach made the list.  Take your pick of benches to watch the panoramic view as the sun sets. Or head down to the sandy shore for a lower view.  Pack a picnic and enjoy whilst watching another day come to a close.  Or if you enjoy surfing, there isn’t a more picturesque spot for catching some waves as the sun dips behind the horizon.  Whether in or out of the water, watch as the sky turns to pink and orange in this idyllic setting.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER, BRIXHAM

A pretty walk along the breakwater takes you half a mile offshore.  When glancing back, you’ll be rewarded with a unique view of the harbour and town.  Experience in calm, clear weather, or witness the dramatic waves smash over the breakwater during stormier weather; this is a superb spot all year round.  Stop in the Breakwater Bistro or the Prince William for a bite to eat or a beverage and watch the sunset from here or as you stroll.  Brixham Breakwater is also a popular fishing spot, where you might catch some mackerel, bass, pollock or mullet.  There couldn’t be a more relaxing evening than casting a line into the sea while the colours of the sky change all around you.  Just remember any boats heading out of the harbour for a sunset trip have right of way.  The lighthouse at the end of the breakwater is a great spot for a sunset picture to remember the evening.

EMSWORTHY ROCKS, DARTMOOR

With breath-taking views from all directions, this is the picture-perfect spot for both sunrise and sunset.  It is an easy location to access Dartmoor, with plenty of nearby car parks for those who are not keen on a big stomp before sundown.  Pack a picnic and settle in as you watch the sky turn orange over the horizon and moorland.  This accessible but remote spot is the perfect place to end another day in paradise on Your Devon Escape.

RIVER DART

The River Dart offers many fantastic spots for sunset.  Beginning on the beautiful Dartmoor, and running into the sea in the lovely Dartmouth, there are many spots to stop along the water and catch the closing light of a wonderful day.  One of our favourites is where the river flows into the sea in Dartmouth.  Watch the sunset between the two headlands as the boats glide in and out of the river.  If you are a kayaker or SUP person, then a sunset paddle should be on your list of things to do!  Check out The Paddle Shack website and organise a sunset paddle.  Or if you don’t want to get into the water but fancy a trip on the river, there are various companies that you can charter a sunset boat trip such as The Banquet Boat.  Get a group of your favourite people together and enjoy an evening trip on the water.  Stay in one of our delightful Dartmouth properties to make the trip home easy!

SOAR MILL COVE, MALBOROUGH

Located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you can understand why this has made the list.  Reach the secluded spot by the South West Coast Path, and potentially enjoy the beach all to yourselves!  Make the trip as part of a coastal walk, or simply park the car in the nearby car park and stroll down.  Get comfortable on the sandy shores and watch as another day in paradise turns to night.  This secluded spot is one of the best in South Devon, so be sure to not miss it on Your Devon Escape.

TEIGNMOUTH BACK BEACH, TEIGNMOUTH

Unlike most beaches in the area, Teignmouth Back Beach faces west, creating the perfect setting for a fabulous sunset.  It is a tranquil haven to watch the sky change colour.  Enjoy the boats bobbing on the water and watch as the world passes by.  For a special treat during the summer, take the passenger ferry across to the hidden gem of Shaldon Beach.  Enjoy the sunset here without having to share it with too many others.  Dogs are welcome on back beach all year round so bring your pup for the sunset too!
