Slapton Beach Clean:  The Devon Concierge Club x The 2minute Foundation

The Devon Concierge Club teamed up with The 2minute Foundation to promote community responsibility in protecting beaches in the South Hams.  They organised a beach cleaning event at Slapton Sands Beach on the 17th of February.  The company brought together local businesses as sponsors alongside hoping to encourage other businesses as well as local people and holidaymakers to get involved.  The Slapton beach clean event was held at Slapton Sands’ middle car park at 11am on the 17th of February.

The Devon Concierge Club is a Devon-based business that provides a holidaymaker service, helping source them everything they need for their visit.  They organised this event to encourage businesses to put measures in place prior to the summer season that will motivate visitors to be more mindful when using South Devon beaches.  The Club stated all were welcome, claiming “The more the merrier!”  Whether you have two minutes or twenty minutes, they have said that every minute counts to reducing marine litter levels.

The Slapton beach clean aimed to increase awareness of the need for beach clean ups, how much waste ends up on our fabulous beaches, and to preserve local areas of outstanding natural beauty.  There is an ever-increasing need to fight against marine litter and make people aware of the need.  Events like this are an excellent way to do this. It can spark a push for people to make a habit out of it every time they are at the beach.

The Slapton beach clean consisted of a one mile walk across part of the beach, where local people, businesses and sponsors collected up the rubbish they could see on the beach.  A total of 47 kilograms of rubbish was collected during the event.

The walk was followed by a raffle and buffet at the Start Bay Studio, supported by some fantastic local businesses.  And a talk was given on how local businesses can help to reduce waste finding itself on the beach.  The event was a great success, bringing the community together and raising awareness.

Beach cleans are a great way to meet like-minded people as well as doing your bit for the environment.  Keep your eyes peeled for future events happening during Your Devon Escape.  Have the opportunity to meet local people, and ask them questions and recommendations for what to do in the local area whilst helping an excellent cause.  Do your part during Your Devon Escape and help keep the area, we all so much enjoy, clean!
