Kingsbridge Fair Week

Kingsbridge Fair Week is held at the end of July each year.  The festivities consist of a carnival, fun fair, parades, races, and live music.  The Fair Week has been a part of the town’s history since 1461, with it growing over the years to become what it is today.

The link with the Fair’s history continues at the glove hanging ceremony on the Wednesday evening of every Fair Week when the charter is read by the town mayor, and a stuffed and garlanded glove is hoisted on the Shambles in Fore Street.  This marks the beginning of the Fair and to signify free trade and clemency for its duration.

The action-packed week begins with the crowning of the new Fair Queen.  Then followed by a week of fun fair, Fireworks, a Teddy Bears Picnic, Three-Legged Race, Big Quiz, dog show and more.  There is so much to be getting involved in during this fun-filled week in Kingsbridge, be sure to not miss out.  Why not book into one of our properties, all located within a short distance of the town, and enjoy this unique event during Your Devon Escape!

The carnival is generally held on the Saturday of the Fair Week.  This is when a procession takes place through the town with floats, bands, and music.  The Fair Week Queen and princesses will be part of the procession through the town.  If you want to enter, head to their website, or if you simply want to spectate, make sure to be there early evening to watch as the carnival classes pass through the streets.  All classes are judged before the procession begins.

The Lantern Parade holds workshops the weekend before the event so that you can create your own lantern and be involved in the parade.  Anyone of any age can make their own lantern to take part.  The Lantern Parade each year has a theme, so be sure to check out the website to find out this year’s theme and to know when the lantern making workshops are taking place!

To enter in the 10k or fun run races, you simply must turn up on the day!  The race usually takes place on the Thursday evening of Fair Week.  Be sure to check out their website for timings of the event.  Pack your running shoes and join in or head on down to the town to cheer everyone on!

There are lots of events and activities happening throughout Fair Week.  To find out when they are happening, be sure to grab a programme.  You can buy one in various locations around the town including the Information Centre, McColl, Co-op, Tesco and Morrisons.
